Case Study of Distance Education at UAS by Lynne Schrum and Jason Ohler

Through a President's Professor endowment, Dr. Lynne Schrum was hired to work jointly with
Jason Ohler (UAS) to conduct a study of attitudes toward distance education at UAS of staff, students

UAS Strategic Plan, Initiative 8:
"Be a center of excellence for distance-delivered
certificate and degree programs"

UAS, under the direction of the Board of Regents, was required to develop a
strategic plan to guide its developoment during 2000-2010. Eight initiatives were developed, one
of which addressed the role of distance education in UAS's future.

Six Pillars of Distance Education

The purpose of the framework was to provide a dynamic and entrepreneurial contextand environment that valued, encouraged, supported distance education within the College of Rural Alaska and the University of Alaska System. The overarching vision was to establish an entity (within the College of Rural Alaska and in partnership with the CRA/UAF Center for Distance Education) and location that would facilitate and enrich all activities related to distance education.
