Save Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are (2/28/08)

I usually don't get involved with petitions like the one to which I have linked below, but it is a charge so impassioned and of such importance to artistic expression that I feel the need to provide this update for my faithful readers.

Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are, which is currently in post, is being threatened with cancellation. A decision has been possibly been made to refilm it from scratch, in what sounds like an echo of Morgan Creek's troubled history with the two Exorcist prequels. And remember how well that turned out.

Read more about this developing story here, and contribute to the conversation.

Spike Jonze, who directed the masterful Being John Malcolvich and Adaptation, is one of the most promising American screenwriters/directors to emerge in the last decade or so. I have not seen Where the Wild Things Are, so I cannot vouch for its quality or worth. But I do urge the studio, even if they wish to spend the money to remake it, to at least also release Jonze's film as he wishes it to exist. I think of Glen Hansard's recent Oscar speech for his work in Once; his simple, true words, "Make art, make art, make art!" Jonze is a cinematic artist of the first degree, and I ask Warner Brothers not to make the mistake of allowing his vision to go unseen. If you agree, I also urge to spread the word, email the studio, and voice your opinion.
